FA CUP FINAL 1966 - EVERTON 3-2 SHEFF WED

The FA Cup Final comeback

There were two football finals at Wembley that year, one might be remembered more than the other, however both were remarkable games. 2-0 down early in the 2nd half, Everton pulled one of the most remarkable final comebacks ever seen in an astonishing spell of attacking football. Also greatly remembered for the pitch invader Eddie Kavanagh, this is one of the best FA Cup Finals ever & has to make our top 10!

OCTOBER 1977 - DIVISION ONE -
QPR 1-5 EVERTON

Bob Hits Four

Individuals scoring 4 goals in a games happens more often nowadays, but in 1977 this was more of a novelty. Bob 'walks on water' Latchford bagged 4 goals on a memorable away day at Loftus Road for Gordon Lee's men. Probably the best individual performance by an Everton player in London still, remind yourself of one of our best ever strikers with the match highlights, delightlfully with the great Brian Moore on comms, below.

FA CUP SEMI-FINAL - APRIL 1984
EVERTON 1-0 SOUTHAMPTON AET

Highbury Invasion

Everton & FA Cup Semi-Final extra time winners became the norm in the 1980's. Getting the first one is always the hardest & this one was definitely was. Highbury didn't see many semi-finals, but this one will live long in the memories of Evertonians. Adrian Heath's winner with 3 minutes of ET left witnessed chaotic scenes & arguably was more important than the final win as it finally meant Everton were in their 1st FA Cup Final for 18 years. Match highlights below with again the excellent Brian Moore on the mic.

DIVISION ONE - APRIL 1985
SPURS 1-2 EVERTON

Big Nev Denies Spurs

League title winning campaigns often have games in the run in that you look back on & say that was when we won it. For the Everton title winning side of 1984/85 this game at Spurs was that one. Spurs were competing themselves along with Man United & of course Liverpool to claw back Everton at the top. This was seen as a crucial game, not that Everton took any notice as they strolled into a 2-0 lead early in the 2nd half. Then a Spurs comeback goal meant the momentum had swung, but the ever reliable Neville Southall pulled off one of the saves of the season to deny Mark Falcao & ensured Everton would not lose their league winning position. Match highlights below with some added pre-match footage.

DIVISION ONE - MARCH 1987
ARSENAL 0-1 EVERTON

Wayne's Wonder

Way before a different Wayne bagged a spectacular goal on debut against Arsenal, Wayne Clarke did the same at Highbury in 1987. This was part of an amazing run of form which propelled Everton to the top of the league. Watch the match highlights below for Clarke's long range strike after John Lukic had made a poor clearance, the following week we were back in London...

DIVISION ONE - APRIL 1987
CHELSEA 1-2 EVERTON

Harper The Hero

After the all important Arsenal win another trip to London was on the agenda a week later. Still trailing Liverpool the Toffees knew they needed another big win in the capital. An Own Goal kick started Everton's day, but a Kerry Dixon (he always scored against us) goal pegged the Toffees back. Big Nev then made a great save as was the norm, from that Everton broke. Possibly the most important player of the season due to his flexibility in positions, Alan Harper produced an arrow like shot from 30 yards that flew into the top corner. Now Everton believed they could catch their neighnours!

PREMIER LEAGUE - AUGUST 2004
CRYSTAL PALACE 1-3 EVERTON

Bouncebackability

Iain Dowie coined the 'bouncebackability' phrase, and here playing against his team Everton showed exactly this early in the Champions League qualifying season of 2004/05. After being soundly beaten by champions Arsenal on the opening day at home, and after falling 1 nil down here a response was required! That is what this David Moyes side showed as Thomas Gravesen gave one of his best displays in a Blue shirt, and Marcus Bent scored one of his many important goals that season. Even a red card to Gary Naysmith didn't prevent an important win in a successful season.

FA CUP SEMI FINAL - APRIL 2009
EVERTON 0-0 MAN UTD (EVERTON WIN 4-2 ON PENS)

Penalty Joy at Wembley

The 120 minutes that proceeded the penalty shoot out is instantly forgettable. The shoot out is as memorable for many reasons. Cahill missing, Howard's two saves, Neville scoring against his club, Vaughan the young man with nerves of steel & Jags scoring the winner for his boyhood team. To be on the terraces that day was like a dream to many, a big win at Wembley had been too long ago. Unfortunately this was the semi-final, not the final, & defeat to Chelsea hurt like hell. But this day must go into the top 10 for a day when for once Moyes got one over the big boys.

FA CUP 4TH ROUND REPLAY - FEBRUARY 2011
CHELSEA 1-1 EVERTON (EVERTON WIN 4-3 ON PENS)

Baines last minute heroics

This FA Cup match was a little more memorable before the penalty shoot out. As regular as the morning sunrise Frank Lampard scored for Chelsea against us in Extra Time to look like giving Chelsea the win. Only for Leighton Baines to step up in the last minute to majestically stroke the free kick into the top corner. Baines actually then missed his spot kick, but so did Anelka. When Johnny Heitinga scored & then shoulder barged Ashley Cole you sensed the momentum had swung. Cue Cole hitting it over & Phil Neville hitting the winning spot kick. The delirium on the trains back to Liverpool was immense, what a day!

PREMIER LEAGUE - SEPTEMBER 2013
WEST HAM 2-3 EVERTON

Baines free kick masterclass

Classic West Ham away matches have been the norm at Upton Park during David Moyes leadership. This one, the first under Roberto Martinez, was even better. Twice trailing & pretty much being second best, Leighton Baines twice pulled out stunning free kicks, one in either corner too, to put the groundwork in for Romelu Lukaku's winner. That was Lukaku's first goal for the club too & was the springboard for a fantastic first season under Martinez. Still those free kicks from Baines get talked about today as one of the best London EFC away days, watch the full match below...
